What do handymen charge to replace a ceiling fan?

The median is $146 across 14 businesses. Peter Pan Handyman in Tampa Bay starts at $99, Fan Handyman and Las Vegas Handyman Services charge $125, Superhandyman near Atlanta $175 at standard height and Ideal Handyman in Las Vegas $175, labor only. Husband for an Hour in Fairbanks charges $315 on an existing box.

Most of these assume the customer has bought the fan and the box is already rated for one.

How much more for a new install or a high ceiling?

A new install, where there was a light or nothing before, costs about twice a swap: Fan Handyman charges $255 against $125. Height adds a step too: Fan Handyman moves to $200 for a swap and $340 for a new install when the ceiling is over 12 ft, and Superhandyman charges $375 for a fan on a second-story ceiling against $175 at standard height.

Ask the ceiling height and whether there is a fan-rated box before you quote. A fixture box that cannot carry a fan turns a swap into a new install.

Should removing the old fan cost extra?

Say either way. Las Vegas Handyman Services charges $25 to take down an old fan, without disposal, on top of its $125 install. Most others fold removal into the swap price.

If you haul the old fan away, add it to the quote; if it stays on the curb or in the garage, say that too.

When is a fan more than a handyman job?

When it needs a new circuit, a new switch run or a new box in a finished ceiling. Fan Handyman’s owner has more than 30 years as an electrician; many handymen are not, and the rules for electrical work vary by state and city, so check what yours allow before you quote new wiring.

Price what you can do and refer what you cannot. A quote that says “uses the existing wiring and switch” keeps the job inside it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a ceiling fan the same price as a light fixture?

At Fan Handyman, yes: $125 to replace either with the customer’s unit and $255 for a new install of either. Fans are heavier and need balancing, so some handymen charge more.

Do I supply the fan?

Most prices here assume the customer buys it. If you supply it, list it at cost or with your stated markup as its own line.

How long does a fan swap take?

GoldKey Repairs estimates about an hour for a fan installation and prices it at its $150 first hour; time your own swaps and price from that.
