Mowing a quarter-acre lawn runs $45–$85 a visit in HomeGuide's national figures; Royal Acres in Terre Haute charges $49 a week. Four weekly cuts at HomeGuide's range come to $180–$340 a month. Ask whether trimming, edging and blowing off the driveway are included, and what the first cut costs if the grass is already long.

How do I turn a mowing price into a monthly cost?
Multiply the price per cut by the cuts that month; weekly mowing is four or five. At HomeGuide's one-acre range of $60–$150 per visit, four cuts is $240–$600. Southbound in Memphis charges $100–$140 a cut for about an acre, or $400–$560 for four, with trimming, edging and blowing included.
Some companies bill per cut and others charge a flat monthly amount across the season. With a flat plan, ask how many cuts the season includes and what happens in a dry month when the grass stops growing, or you may pay for visits that never happen. Compare two offers on the same number of cuts.
Which yard details change a mowing quote?
The grass you can mow, more than the lot size. HomeGuide's bands run from $30–$40 a visit for an eighth of an acre to $60–$150 for an acre, but a quarter-acre lot with a house, driveway and patio has far less turf. Gates too narrow for a riding mower, slopes, and beds and trees to trim around all add time.
Royal Acres prices from actual grass area: $49 a week for its quarter-acre example and $54–$61 for a half-acre lot. Southbound prices one-time cuts separately from its regular schedule, and an overgrown first cut takes longer. Ask what grass height the regular price assumes. Bagging, hauling clippings and leaf cleanup are separate jobs; name them if you want them.
What should a routine mowing visit include?
Mow, trim, edge and blow: cut the grass, string-trim around beds, trees and fences, edge along the driveway and walks, and blow clippings off the hard surfaces. That is what Southbound's $45–$65 a cut covers for 5,000 to 11,000 square feet of lawn in Memphis and DeSoto County. Ask whether clippings are mulched back in or bagged.
Fertilizer, weed control, aeration and irrigation repair are separate services with their own prices; HomeGuide lists fertilization apart from mowing. Before the first visit, settle the gate code, where the dog will be and which day the crew comes, so a locked gate doesn't turn the crew away.
What should I ask before agreeing to a lawn-care plan?
Send this: Please quote weekly mowing for the grass areas in my photos, with trimming, edging and blowing off the driveway and walks. The back gate is [width] and the grass is now [height]. What is your price per cut, what does the first cut cost, and how do you bill when you skip a week for rain or drought?
Compare quotes on the same work and the same number of cuts. A low monthly price can mean fewer visits; a low per-cut price can leave out edging. Ask how you'll hear about a skipped or extra cut, such as a text the day before.

Why does a small yard cost almost as much as a bigger one?
Driving over, unloading and loading the trailer take the same time on any lot. HomeGuide's quarter-acre band starts only $15 above its eighth-acre band, though the lot is twice the size.
Do I need to be home when the lawn is mowed?
No, as long as the crew can reach the grass. Leave the gate unlocked or share the code, and keep pets inside on mowing day.
What is the difference between lawn care and landscaping?
Lawn care is the recurring work on the grass: mowing, trimming, edging and treatments. Landscaping is one-time work on beds, plants and hard surfaces, priced by the project.
