Lawn mowing cost calculator
HomeGuide lists mowing a quarter-acre lawn at $45–$85 per visit and a full acre at $60–$150, checked October 15, 2026. An acre is four times the grass of a quarter acre and costs well under twice as much, because the drive, unloading, trimming and blow-off happen at every lawn whatever its size. Set your per-visit minimum from those fixed costs first, then charge for mowing time above it.

What’s a fair minimum for a mowing visit?
Check it against the smallest lawns in the published bands. HomeGuide’s smallest band, an eighth-acre lawn, runs $30–$40 a visit. Your minimum pays for the stop itself: the drive, unloading the mower and trimmer, the trim and blow-off, and loading up again. A small lawn needs less mowing, not less of any of that.
Per-acre math is where new owners lose money on small lawns. HomeGuide’s one-acre band of $60–$150 has a midpoint of $105 an acre. A 10,000 sq ft lawn is 0.23 acre (10,000 ÷ 43,560), so $105 an acre prices it at $24, under even the eighth-acre band. Charge by the acre only above your minimum, and let the minimum carry every small lawn on the route.
How much more should a half-acre lawn cost?
Less than most people expect. Royal Acres in Terre Haute charges $49 a week for a quarter-acre lot and $54–$61 for a half acre, so twice the lot costs $5–$12 more. Southbound in Memphis lists $45–$65 a cut for 5,000–11,000 sq ft and $100–$140 for about an acre. A bigger lawn adds time on the mower; the trimming, unloading and travel barely change.
Measure the grass, not the lot. Royal Acres prices from actual grass area, which leaves out the house, the driveway, the beds and the wooded corners. Then look at what slows the trimmer down: fence lines, tree rings, beds, a playset, a bank you have to mow across. A small yard full of obstacles can take longer than an open half acre, so price the time it takes.
Should mowing every two weeks cost more per visit than weekly?
Yes, in most yards. Two weeks of spring growth means taller, thicker grass, slower mowing, heavier clippings and sometimes a second pass to leave a clean finish. Royal Acres publishes weekly rates, and Southbound in Memphis prices one-time cuts apart from its regular service. Charge every-two-weeks visits above your weekly price and one-time cuts above both.
The usual mistake is discounting the recurring route too far. A weekly customer does save you quoting time and gaps in the schedule, so a small break on the weekly price can pay for itself. A season price that drops below your minimum, or one that quietly covers the overgrown cut after a rainy stretch, comes straight out of what the route leaves you.
Example: a quarter-acre lawn on a weekly route
Mowing costs you $80 an acre in mower time and fuel, so a quarter acre is $20, plus $15 for the drive and the trimming: $35. At a 30% margin, $35 ÷ 0.70 = $50. Your $60 minimum lifts it to $60 a visit, inside HomeGuide’s $45–$85 quarter-acre band and $11 above Royal Acres’ $49 weekly price in Terre Haute.
Frequently asked questions
What should I charge for an overgrown first cut?
Quote it as its own job. A lawn left for a month may need the deck raised for a first pass, a second pass lower and the clippings raked or bagged, so price the time and the dump fee you’ll actually spend. Tell the customer the weekly price starts with the second visit.
Should I charge extra to bag clippings?
Yes, when bagging isn’t your standard. It means stopping to empty the catcher, carrying bags to the truck and paying to get rid of them, and all of that grows in spring and after rain. Price it per visit as a named add-on, or make mulching the clippings your standard and say so on the quote.
What happens to the price when rain pushes a mowing day back?
Keep the price and move the visit to the next dry day; weekly customers expect that. The cost shows up in the cut itself, because wet grass clumps and mows slower and a route that slips a few days ends up cutting longer grass. If rain stretches the gap to two weeks, bill that visit at your every-two-weeks price.
