Landscaping cost for a small yard: refresh versus installation

A small landscaping project runs $300–$800 in HomeGuide's national figures, and a new landscape installation $3,000–$16,000. For a bed refresh, Thrive Landscape and Design in Austin charges $60–$110 per cubic yard for mulch, installed, with delivery and bed prep included. Ask what prep, plant sizes and haul-away the price covers, and how many cubic yards of mulch it assumes.

What makes a small landscaping job cost more?

The work you can't see when it's done: digging out old shrubs and roots, pulling failed edging, hauling off dirt, and wheelbarrowing everything through a narrow side gate. HomeGuide puts a two-person crew at $50–$100 per crew-hour, so each extra hour of digging adds $50–$100. Send photos of the beds and the path from the street when you ask for prices.

A refresh keeps the bed shapes and the healthy plants: weed, re-edge, top up the mulch. A redesign pulls everything, regrades and replants, and its price heads toward the installation range. If water pools in the bed, ask what the plan does about it, since fresh mulch on a low spot floats off in the next storm.

How should plants, mulch and labor show up on a quote?

As separate lines: the bed area, mulch type and cubic yards, each plant by name and pot size, labor as hours or a fixed price, delivery, haul-away and cleanup. Pot size moves the price, since a bigger shrub costs more and needs a bigger hole. Irrigation, lighting and ongoing maintenance belong on the quote as options you can say yes or no to.

HomeGuide's crew-hour rate covers both workers, so don't multiply it by two. Mulch gets quoted two ways. Thrive's $60–$110 per cubic yard includes delivery, bed prep and labor; CheapMulch's $35 per cubic yard covers the mulch, labor and equipment, with delivery billed by distance. Add the delivery charge before comparing the two.

How much does it cost to mulch flower beds?

Three cubic yards installed at Thrive's Austin rate comes to $180–$330, with delivery and bed prep. At CheapMulch's rate the same three yards is $105 plus delivery. The yards come from bed area times depth, so ask the landscaper to put both numbers on the quote.

Ask whether the old mulch is being raked out, turned in or covered. New mulch piled on a thick old layer, or heaped against trunks and stems, holds moisture there and invites rot. Two quotes can differ only because one assumes a thinner layer, so compare cubic yards to cubic yards.

What should I ask before hiring a landscaper?

Send this: Please quote refreshing [beds or area] in the photos. Keep [plants or features]; remove [plants, edging]. Please list bed prep, mulch type and cubic yards, each plant and its pot size, delivery, haul-away and cleanup. If you hit roots, rock or buried debris, how will the extra digging be priced?

Get plant names and pot sizes on the quote; "install shrubs" lets both change on the day. If the quote promises to fix drainage, ask how: regrading, a French drain or a dry creek bed. Ask whether new plants are guaranteed through their first season and who waters them while they root in.

Frequently asked questions

Is landscaping priced by the square foot?

Some installers quote an area rate. Bed work is easier to compare as crew-hours plus materials, because two quotes for the same square footage can assume different plant sizes and mulch depth.

Does a landscaping quote include removing old plants?

Only if clearing, root removal and disposal are named lines. A planting price can assume the bed is already clear.

Should I do the whole yard at once?

If the budget is tight, do it in stages: drainage and grading first, then beds and plants, then lighting and decorative work, so a later stage doesn't dig up what you already paid for.
