Does a painting price per square foot mean walls or floor?
Either, so ask which. HomeGuide lists $1–$3 per square foot of surface and $3–$7 per square foot of floor. A room has far more wall than floor, so the wall rate is lower per foot. For a 12-by-14 bedroom, the floor method gives $504–$1,176. Multiply a wall rate by floor area and the budget comes out too low.
Wall area grows with ceiling height, so a room with a vaulted ceiling or a stairwell wall costs more than its floor size suggests, and it needs taller ladders or a plank. Send photos of the whole room plus close-ups of cracks, nail pops, water stains and peeling paint, so the painter can price the prep before the visit.
What should an interior painting quote include?
Each room and surface: walls, ceiling, baseboards, window and door trim, doors, closets. Then the prep (patching, sanding, caulking, spot-priming), the paint brand, line and sheen, the number of coats, who moves furniture, and cleanup. Doors add up: HomeGuide puts an interior door at $75–$150 per door, so three doors add $225–$450.
A color change, especially dark to light, takes two coats, so get the coat count in writing. Water stains and smoke damage need a stain-blocking primer first or they bleed through the new paint. Ask how damage found during prep will be priced, and ask for a call before they go past the quote.
How much does adding the ceiling change a room quote?

Ceilings are slow work: rolling overhead, drop cloths over everything, and flat paint that shows lap marks if it is rushed. A ceiling with one water stain still needs stain-blocking primer and a full coat across the whole ceiling, because a patch on flat paint shows. Get that priced as its own line too.
What should I ask before booking a painter?
Send this: Please quote painting [rooms]: walls, plus [ceilings, trim, doors] as listed. The photos show [cracks, stains, peeling]. Please list the prep, primer, paint brand and sheen, number of coats, furniture moving and cleanup, and price the ceilings and doors as separate lines. How will you price repairs you find during prep?
A quote that just says "paint bedroom" leaves the coats, the prep and the trim to be argued about later. When one quote is far below the others, check it for one coat, no primer or walls only. Put the color names and sheens on the signed quote so the crew paints what you picked.

Should I buy the paint myself?
You can, but then running short or buying the wrong sheen is on you. Ask the painter for the exact product, sheen and number of gallons, and how much the price drops if you supply it.
Why does a living room cost so much more than a bedroom?

Is trim included in a room price?
Only if the quote says so. Baseboards, window casing and door frames are brush work in a different sheen from the walls; ask for them as their own line.
