Net 30 meaning: the due date, weekends and reminders
Net 30 means the full invoice amount is due 30 calendar days after the invoice date. An invoice dated October 15, 2026 is due November 14, 2026, which is a Saturday. Weekends and holidays count. Write the actual date beside "Net 30" on the invoice so the client never has to count, and if you would rather it not land on a weekend, give the next business day.
Are net 30 days calendar days or business days?
Calendar days, unless your agreement says otherwise. Federal agencies, which pay under the Prompt Payment Act, count every calendar day, weekends and federal holidays included; when the due date falls on a weekend or holiday, payment is due the next business day. Applied to the October 15, 2026 invoice, that moves Saturday, November 14, 2026 to Monday, November 16, 2026.
Private clients have no single rule, so remove the guesswork by printing the due date. Count from the invoice date, not from the day the client opened the email. If a client's accounts team counts from the day they received or approved the invoice, settle that before you start the work and write it into the terms.
What does a net 30 invoice look like?
Put three lines together near the total: Invoice date: October 15, 2026. Terms: Net 30. Due: November 14, 2026. Add the invoice number and how to pay (bank transfer details, a card payment link, or who to make a check out to) on the same page, so nothing stands between the client and paying on time.
Use the same due date on the invoice PDF, the payment page and every reminder. If you invoice from QuickBooks, FreshBooks or Wave, the due date it calculates is the one to quote in your follow-ups. A reminder that names a different date from the invoice gives a slow payer an easy excuse.
Should a small business offer net 30?
Offer it when the client's payment process needs the time (offices, property managers, larger companies) and you can afford to carry the cost of the job for a month. Before you agree, add up what you pay out before the money arrives: materials, helpers, fuel. If that is more than you can float, ask for a deposit or split the job into milestone payments.
Homeowners and one-off customers usually pay on completion or within a few days, so net 30 is mostly a business-to-business term. Treat payment terms as part of the price: a client who wants 60 days is asking for credit. Agree the terms at the quote stage, then put them on the invoice. A client who pays late every month needs a deposit or shorter terms on the next job.
What should I send as the due date gets close?
A short note a few days before, with the invoice number, the amount and the date: "A quick reminder that invoice 1047 for $1,800 is due November 14, 2026. The payment link is below. Let me know if your accounts team needs anything else from me." After the due date, ask when payment is scheduled and keep the same invoice number in every message.
Check your bank before sending; a reminder for an invoice that was paid yesterday costs goodwill. If the client asks for a purchase-order number or a corrected billing address, fix it the same day and resend the invoice with the original date and terms. The payment reminder guide has a ready message for each stage, from friendly to final.
Frequently asked questions
What does 2/10 net 30 mean?
The client can take 2% off if they pay within 10 days; otherwise the full amount is due in 30. On a $1,800 invoice dated October 15, 2026, that is $1,764 by October 25, 2026 or $1,800 by November 14, 2026.
What is the difference between net 30 and net 60?
Only the number of days. The same October 15, 2026 invoice on net 60 is due December 14, 2026. Longer terms mean you wait longer for your money, so price them in or ask for a deposit.
Does net 30 mean the end of next month?
No. That is a different term, usually written "end of month" or "EOM". Net 30 counts 30 days from the invoice date; end-of-next-month terms on the same invoice would mean November 30, 2026.
Can I charge a late fee on a net 30 invoice?
Only if the late fee was in the terms the client agreed to before the work. Print it on the invoice too, with the amount or rate and when it applies, so the reminder is never the first time the client hears of it.
