Open with what it is and what it's for, then size, materials, options, personalization, processing time and care. For a made-to-order pouch: “Personalized zip pouch with your name embroidered on the front. Holds pens, a charger and earbuds, or a small makeup kit. Size: 9 x 6 in (23 x 15 cm), measured flat.” Use the words a shopper would search in your title, tags and first sentence.

What should an Etsy product description say?

What arrives, how big it is, what it's made of, what the buyer gets to choose and how long it takes to make. Lead with the product in a shopper's own words, then answer the questions that would otherwise come by message: will my things fit, how long can the name be, can I wash it, when will it ship.

Give sizes as numbers with units, plus one thing a buyer can picture: “fits a 7 in makeup brush” or “holds about a dozen pens”. The photo shows the look; the number is what they check against what they want to carry.

Name materials you can vouch for, like “cotton canvas” and “nylon coil zipper”. Premium and eco-friendly give a buyer nothing to check; “prewashed, so it won't shrink” answers a real worry.

What does a good Etsy product description look like?

Personalized zip pouch with your name embroidered on the front. Holds pens, a charger and earbuds, or a small makeup kit. Size: 9 x 6 in (23 x 15 cm), measured flat. Materials: cotton canvas outside, cotton lining, nylon coil zipper. Prewashed, so it won't shrink. Options: pouch color (natural, sage or navy) and thread color (white, black or gold). Personalization: up to 10 letters, block capitals or script. I stitch exactly what you type, so check the spelling. Processing time: 3 to 5 business days, made to order. Care: machine wash cold, inside out; line dry. Iron on the back of the stitching. Pens and makeup in the photos are not included.

“I stitch exactly what you type” settles the Kaitlyn-or-Katelyn question before anyone orders. Use the same option names in the text and the drop-downs, so “sage” in the description is “sage” in the menu.

Can I copy an Etsy product description template?

[Personalized or handmade] [item] with [main feature]. Holds [what it holds or fits]. Size: [width x height] in ([cm]), [measured flat or finished]. Materials: [outside], [lining or base], [hardware]. [Anything that answers a worry.] Options: [option one and its choices] and [option two and its choices]. Personalization: up to [number] [letters or characters], [fonts]. [How you handle spelling.] Processing time: [number] business days, [made to order or ready to ship]. Care: [washing], [drying], [ironing or storage]. [Props in the photos] are not included.

For a digital download, say so in the first line and list what the buyer gets: “Digital download: one PDF, 8.5 x 11 in, and one PNG. Nothing ships.” For a print sold unframed, put “unframed” before the size, even when the main photo shows it in a frame.

What words help an Etsy listing get found?

The words a shopper would type, in plain order: what it is, what it's made of, who it's for, and the size or style. For the pouch that means “personalized zip pouch”, “embroidered name pouch”, “cotton makeup bag” and “kids pencil case”. Put them in your title, tags and attributes, and use the main phrase in your first sentence, where it also tells a reader what they're looking at.

Think about who's searching. Someone buying for a teacher types “teacher gift pouch”; a parent types “name pencil case”. If both fit, give each a tag, and fill in attributes such as color, material and occasion. Occasion phrases like “gift for mom” belong in tags; repeated through the description, they read like a list.

From November on, add the last day to order for delivery by December 25: your processing time plus your slowest shipping option. Move it earlier if orders back up.

Frequently asked questions

Should I write my Etsy description in first person?

It suits a one-person shop and reads naturally in the personalization and care lines: “I stitch exactly what you type.” Keep the facts in short lines at the top and any story about how you make it after them.

What's the difference between processing time and shipping time?

Processing time is how long you take to make and pack the order; shipping time is the carrier's part after that. A buyer adds the two, so set processing time to what you can keep in your busiest week.

Do I need a separate Etsy listing for each color?

Not when only the color changes. Offer the colors as options on one listing and write the description once.
