How much to charge for sprinkler winterization by zone

Pure Irrigation’s 2026 Utah County and Salt Lake County special is $125 per system with every zone included. TriState Water Works in Cincinnati starts one-time winterization at $125 for up to six zones, plus $15 for each extra zone. Both were checked October 2026. Decide whether your rate covers the system or extra zones before multiplying.

Should you charge per system or per zone?

A flat system price is simple when your usual properties take similar time. A base visit with included zones makes differences in larger systems visible. The two published cards illustrate both structures: Pure includes every zone in its special, while TriState adds a charge only after the first six.

Write the included zone count beside the base price. If you use an extra-zone rate, apply it only to the zones beyond that allowance. Multiplying the full zone count by an extra-zone charge gives the wrong quote. A visit minimum and an included-zone package are different pricing rules.

What should you check before fixing the price?

Confirm the zone count, controller and shutoff access, connection location and any known system fault. Record whether the property has several controllers or separate systems. The customer may count landscape areas while you need the irrigation zones that will be serviced, so keep the scope tied to the actual setup.

Allow for locked gates, an indoor shutoff or a connection far from vehicle access. Price travel and setup into the visit. If repairs are needed, describe and quote them separately; a routine seasonal shutdown should not silently expand into troubleshooting an unknown leak or replacing failed parts.

Does a maintenance-plan price belong on the one-time price list?

Show one-time service and annual-plan rates as separate offers. TriState publishes both, and the rows here use its one-time winterization price. A plan may bundle spring startup, checks or other visits. The lower charge for one plan visit cannot be compared fairly without its full annual commitment.

Put spring startup on its own scope unless the accepted package includes it. Keep the shutdown record for that later visit: controller setting, zones serviced, access details and work left for repair. That record saves repeated discovery while keeping future work separate from the completed winterization.

How do you set a winterization rate from your costs?

Add paid service time, travel, compressor or other equipment cost, fuel, setup, supplies and business overhead. Include your own pay. Divide the full visit cost by one minus your target margin, then compare the result with the service structures in the price table. Keep the price high enough to cover a stand-alone visit.

For grouped appointments, use the actual travel saved along the route. A nearby group may reduce time between stops without reducing the time each system needs. Reserve room for access delays and return visits you have included in the service terms, and record actual time by zone count for next season’s pricing.

Use the provider’s base package first, then count only zones above the included allowance. Pure’s special is a flat system price.

Eight zones on the Cincinnati one-time card. TriState’s base covers six zones. Two additional zones use its $15 extra-zone rate.

Winterization, first six zones: 1 base visit × $125 = $125.

Zones beyond six: 2 additional zones × $15 = $30.

Example total: $155. Rate source: TriState Water Works: Cincinnati pricing plans, checked 2026-10-15.

Twelve zones on the Cincinnati one-time card. The first six zones stay in the base visit; six more receive the extra-zone charge.

Winterization, first six zones: 1 base visit × $125 = $125.

Zones beyond six: 6 additional zones × $15 = $90.

Example total: $215. Rate source: TriState Water Works: Cincinnati pricing plans, checked 2026-10-15.

Frequently asked questions

Is the extra-zone price charged for every zone?

Apply it only as the provider defines it. TriState’s $125 one-time base includes up to six zones, so its $15 addition starts with the seventh. Keep the base allowance and extra count on separate lines.

Should a small system cost less than the minimum?

The visit still needs travel, setup and equipment. Use the minimum or base package you quoted even if the system has fewer included zones. Explain the included service before booking so the customer understands the flat visit charge.

How do I price two controllers at one property?

Confirm whether they operate one system or separate setups and how many service connections are needed. Describe the systems in the scope, then allow for actual setup and zone time. Two controllers on one connection is one blowout; two connections is two.

Does winterization include repairing broken sprinkler heads?

Include repairs only when they are named in the accepted scope. Record visible problems and quote the repair work separately. A seasonal service price should clearly identify what was completed and which repairs remain.

Should spring startup be included?

Include it only in a package that names the return visit and its price. A one-time winterization booking can remain separate from spring work. Keep both services visible when offering an annual maintenance plan.

Can I offer a neighborhood winterization discount?

Use the route’s actual travel and setup savings to set the offer. Keep the same service scope and included-zone allowance. Confirm appointment access so a missed stop does not turn a compact route into several return trips.
